Department of Applied Chemistry

The Department of Applied Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, founded in 2023, offers a multidisciplinary approach to chemistry. The curriculum was designed by Dr. Amina Sekaly, the department chair, and combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience to ensure students develop a strong foundation in chemistry. The interdisciplinary approach set the foundation for careers in advanced Environmental Chemistry and Food Technology studies.

Dr. Amina Sekaly is an accomplished alumna of Somali National University, where she earned a degree in Industrial Chemistry. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Rome, La Sapienza, with a focus on biosensor development using banana peel. Her research also delves into identifying the origin of bananas based on their chemical composition, particularly examining varieties like Somalita, which was exported from Somalia during the 1980s, along with  Chiquita and  Bonita bananas.

Following the outbreak of the civil war in the early 1990s, Dr. Sekaly emigrated to Canada, where she pursued further academic achievements. She completed a Master of Science and earned a second Ph.D. in Chemistry, specializing in speciation of heavy metals in the environment. Her research is deeply rooted in environmental chemistry, particularly focused on the effects of heavy metals on ecosystems.

Driven by a passion for scientific advancement and a commitment to empowering Somali youth, Dr. Sekaly founded a department dedicated to advancing education and research in these critical fields.
